Orientation and Mobility Training
At NFBM Jagriti School for Blind Girls, we believe that true empowerment begins with independence. For our visually impaired students, Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training is a vital component of education—one that enables them to navigate the world with confidence, safety, and dignity.
Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training is a structured program designed to teach visually impaired individuals how to move safely and independently through different environments—whether it’s walking confidently across a classroom, navigating a busy hallway, or traveling independently outdoors.
Our program focuses on:
Spatial awareness and body orientation
White cane techniques
Route planning and landmark identification
Crossing streets and using public transport
Understanding environmental cues through sound and touch
Why It Matters?
Most of our students come from rural or under-resourced backgrounds where independent mobility was never encouraged—or even possible. For them, simple tasks like walking to the dining hall or going from the classroom to the playground can feel overwhelming at first.
Through regular O&M training, our girls learn not only how to move freely but how to do so safely and with self-assurance. They become less reliant on others, develop sharper orientation skills, and gain a sense of agency that carries over into their academics, social interactions, and future careers.
How We Train
At Jagriti, O&M training is delivered by trained mobility instructors who work closely with each student, considering their age, level of visual impairment, and confidence. The sessions are both individualized and group-based, conducted daily, and integrated into the school’s routine.
We also use assistive tools and auditory markers to enhance learning, and gradually transition students from indoor navigation to outdoor independent travel, including use of public roads and basic transport systems.
The Impact
Over 90% of our students can now move confidently within school premises without assistance.
Many alumni have transitioned into college hostels and independent living with the help of their O&M skills.
O&M has been critical in boosting students’ self-esteem, safety awareness, and readiness for mainstream integration.
Support and Sustainability
O&M training requires consistent personnel, resources, and periodic equipment like white canes, tactile maps, and auditory aids. With continued support from our donors and partners, we aim to expand the program, enhance training materials, and bring in innovations like GPS-based mobility tools in the future.
At NFBM Jagriti, Orientation and Mobility is more than a skill—it’s freedom.
With your support, we can help every blind girl move forward—confidently, independently, and without fear.
Counseling & Emotional Well-being
Nurturing Minds. Supporting Hearts. Empowering Futures.
At NFBM Jagriti School for Blind Girls, we understand that education goes beyond academics. For our visually impaired students, emotional strength, self-worth, and mental clarity are just as essential as literacy and life skills.
That’s why mental health and emotional well-being are at the heart of our holistic approach to education.
We aim to create a school environment where every girl feels seen, heard, and emotionally safe—a place where her mind is calm, her heart is strong, and her spirit is ready to soar.
Why Emotional Well-being Matters?
Many of our students come from underprivileged backgrounds, often facing social stigma, isolation, or emotional trauma due to their disability. Adapting to life without sight can be overwhelming—and without the right support, it can lead to low self-esteem, anxiety, or a sense of helplessness.
Through dedicated counseling and emotional support, we help our girls build inner resilience, develop healthy coping strategies, and foster a strong sense of identity and purpose.
Our Counseling Program Includes:
- Individual Counseling
One-on-one sessions with a qualified counselor help students express emotions, manage stress, deal with past trauma, and navigate personal or academic challenges.
- Group Therapy & Peer Support Circles
Small-group discussions create a safe, supportive space where students share experiences, learn from each other, and build a sense of belonging and empathy.
- Mindfulness and Self-Awareness Activities
We integrate basic mindfulness practices, relaxation techniques, and self-reflection exercises to help students manage emotions, reduce anxiety, and improve concentration.
- Life Skills and Confidence Building
Workshops and interactive sessions focus on areas like communication, assertiveness, problem-solving, and goal-setting—building emotional intelligence alongside academic growth.
- Teacher and Caregiver Sensitization
Our counselors also work closely with teachers and caregivers to help them recognize emotional distress and respond with empathy and sensitivity.
Impact So Far
- Noticeable improvement in student confidence, participation, and interpersonal skills.
- Reduced levels of anxiety and social withdrawal among newly admitted students.
- Stronger student-teacher relationships and peer support culture within the school.
Self-Defense Coaching
Strength. Safety. Self-Confidence.
At NFBM Jagriti School for Blind Girls, we believe that every girl—regardless of her abilities—deserves to feel safe, confident, and in control of her own body and space.
Our Self-Defense Coaching Program is a vital part of our curriculum, empowering visually impaired girls with the skills, techniques, and mindset needed to protect themselves in real-world situations.
To raise a generation of fearless, resilient young women who are not defined by their disability—but empowered by their courage, self-belief, and skill.
Why Self-Defense Matters?
For girls with visual impairment, personal safety often becomes a matter of dependence. At Jagriti, we challenge that mindset. We train our students to rely on their instincts, reflexes, strength, and awareness, enabling them to respond calmly and effectively if faced with danger or uncomfortable situations.
More than just physical techniques, self-defense coaching builds confidence, presence of mind, and assertiveness—qualities that are essential both on and off campus.
Our Program Includes:
- Basic Self-Defense Techniques – Students are trained in simple yet effective moves designed to block, escape, and defend against physical threats, adapted specifically for non-visual learners.
- Use of Sound and Touch – Training emphasizes the use of heightened senses—especially hearing and touch—to detect movement, assess distance, and respond accurately in close-contact situations.
- Situational Awareness & Verbal Boundaries – Girls learn to trust their instincts, set firm verbal boundaries, and recognize early warning signs of risk or discomfort—skills that help prevent conflict before it starts.
- Confidence & Assertiveness Building – Through role-plays, group exercises, and confidence-boosting routines, students learn to raise their voice when needed, assert their rights, and carry themselves with self-assurance.
- Regular Practice and Encouragement – Self-defense sessions are conducted regularly and designed to be fun, engaging, and empowering, with a strong focus on building muscle memory and inner strength.
Our Impact
- Over 100 students trained in adapted self-defense techniques.
- Noticeable boost in student confidence, posture, and voice.
- Girls report feeling more secure while traveling independently or interacting in public spaces.
Table Tennis Coaching
Focus. Agility. Joy in Every Rally.
At NFBM Jagriti School for Blind Girls, we believe that sports should be for everyone—including those without sight. Our Table Tennis Coaching Program is a celebration of ability, resilience, and the sheer joy of play. Specially adapted for visually impaired players, table tennis helps our students build focus, coordination, speed, and confidence—all while having fun.
Often seen as a fast-paced visual game, table tennis may seem unconventional for blind players—but with the right adaptation and coaching, it becomes an empowering and exhilarating sport.
Using sound-based cues, tactile feedback, and strategic training, our students learn to track the ball through hearing, predict its movement, and respond with precision and skill.
How It Works
- Modified Table & Equipment: The game is adapted using an audible ball (fitted with ball bearings), side barriers, and tactile guides to help players understand positioning and boundaries.
- Sound-Based Tracking: Students are trained to rely on auditory cues—listening closely to the bounce, rhythm, and direction of the ball to return serves with accuracy.
- Physical & Mental Agility: Table tennis improves reflexes, concentration, hand-eye (or ear-hand) coordination, and spatial awareness—all vital life skills for our visually impaired students.
- Inclusive Coaching: Sessions are led by trained coaches who understand the unique needs of blind players and focus on building skills gradually, with encouragement and consistency.
Our table tennis coaching does more than teach a sport. It:
- Boosts self-confidence and motivation
- Promotes peer interaction and teamwork
- Provides an energizing outlet for physical activity and mental focus
- Opens doors to competitive opportunities at para-sport and inclusive sporting events
Impact and Aspirations
- Students have represented the school in inter-school and state-level blind table tennis tournaments
- Regular practice has helped improve discipline, attention span, and overall physical fitness
- We’re working toward establishing a full-fledged para-sports wing, with table tennis as a core component
